Today, the profits of our new anthology What Champagne Was Like was presented to the Carlow Youth Services in Montgomery House. Rozz Lewis, Carlow Writers presented the cheque to Kathryn Wall and some of her staff. She had a lovely chat with her about the charity and can verify that the money is going to genuine causes and to help the youth get through difficult times in their lives. We were delighted to have raised €938.78 on our anthology.
Carlow Writers' launched their first anthology called "What champagne was like" last Thursday, 6th June in the Teach Bar in Carlow Town. It was launched by Jamie O' Connell, author of Some kind of beauty and he treated us to a new story he has been working on. Guests mingled over glasses of prosecco and the Hard Times band provided us with laid back, groovy music. A fabulous night was had!
On Tuesday, 11th we all met in the Carlow Library to read from our anthology at the Carlow Arts Festival. John Shorthall, the Librarian introduced us and we managed to sell some more copies of the book. All profits are going to Carlow Youth Services,a charity we are very happy to be supporting. Thanks to all of our patrons and sponsors and to everyone who helped bring this project to fruition. We will now take a break for the summer and rejoin, with full energy in the Autumn term. The Carlow Writers' Co-operative is delighted to announce the launch of our first anthology, What Champagne Was Like, on June 6th in Teach Dolmain. The book will be launched by Jamie O'Connell, author of Some Kind of Beauty.
We'd love to see you there. The fun kicks off at 7:30pm and is free of charge. You can buy our book for a special launch price of €8. All profits go to Carlow Regional Youth Services. Competition

Carlow Writers Christmas party in the Teach Dolmain pub We gave out 2 poems for the group to read and be inspired by! They are Horse People http://poems.com/poem.php?date=15587 and Listening to blackbirds athttp://poems.com/poem.php?date=15528. The theme for our Christmas homework is animals or birds. You will also need to keep the overall theme of Passageways in mind too! Tricky but I am sure we are all buzzing with ideas already. This piece must be a new piece to bring to the group when we meet back on Monday, 14th January at 7:30 I told you we were a talented bunch!
Not only did we get a win in the poetry competition on KCLR FM but another poet in the group, Phelim Kavanagh had two of his poems selected to go in a very special place! Phelim's poems will be features as part of the National Art exhibition to be exhibited at Enniscorthy Castle from 8th of December to 13 January 2013. This is a joint venture organised by the DFP Northern Ireland and the OPW Southern ireland. This is the exhibitions last port of call. Phelim's poems to accompany Gavan Dunn's An island is born and Bernadette Kiely's Haystacks burning marinas field. A very well done and congratulations to Phelim, who works hard at the craft. This is well deserved and an honour for him and the group. Carlow Writers' Group are a talented bunch but far too modest!
Last week, Simon Lewis won 1st prize in the local radio's poetry competition. He went on air to read his poem out and collected €300! Well done to Simon! His poem will be available here very soon. We are waiting to hear back from the radio station as to whether he owns it or they do! Artists, eh? We have all done some great writing on the theme of the moon at our last meeting. We set ourselves another challenge around the words-tunnel,estate and/or dolmen. Again, we got some great writing from the group. Our next task is to bring our revised and edited work to the group on Monday, 1st December. The 17th December session will be a Christmas Party at 8 in the Teach. We will have a short meeting beforehand at 7 to make sure that our piece(on any of the themes-moon, dolmen, estate and tunnel) are ready to go to our excellent author Derek Coyle!
See you all at the next meeting and happy writing and reading! |
